The University of Tampere was founded in Helsinki in 1925 and was then called "Civic College". The university moved to Tampere in 1960 and was officially named University of Tampere in 1966. In 1974 it became an official state university. The University has six faculties: Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Economics and Administration, Faculty of Medicine Faculty of Education, and Faculty of Information Sciences (since August 2001). The faculty of information sciences includes the Hypermedia Laboratory. The university has been advancing the use of ICT and ODL for long and is deeply involved in national cooperation through the Virtual University of Finland and local cooperation with the eTampere program of the Tampere city.

The University of Tampere has 1,800 employees, from whom approximately 900 in teaching and research. The University has some 14,000 degree students. Personnel and students directly involved with ICT are estimated on the basis of involvement in the currently ongoing OnLine teaching and courses (in full time equivalents): 15 support and technical staff, 80 teachers, 5,000 students on OnLine courses from whom 3,000 different persons.
